Dissecting SQL Server Partitioned Tables

Speaker: Ralph Attard

Level: 400

A deep dive into SQL Server Partitioned Tables. Introduced with SQL Server 2005 this is a feature that allows one table to be split into smaller parts transparently based on a partitioning key. This session will start off with an introduction and debunk some myths whilst covering the basics of partition functions and partition schemes. We will then delve into advanced scenarios including loading/extracting data using staging tables, using read only file groups for past data, truncating specific partitions, and also rebuild indexes selectively.
